Encryption: who can read your files?

Dropbox encrypts files at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS. Dropbox manages those keys, so the provider, an attacker who breaches it, or anyone who can legally compel it can in principle access your files. Dropbox states it doesn't offer client-side encryption for regular files.

Business Plus, Advanced and Enterprise teams can create end-to-end encrypted team folders, but those folders don't support shared links. In other words, the moment you want to send a file to someone outside your team, it can't be end-to-end encrypted on Dropbox.

VeilShare encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM in your browser before a single byte is uploaded. The key lives in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to a server. We only ever store ciphertext, so we couldn't read your files even if we wanted to.

Accounts and personal data

To share anything on Dropbox you need a Dropbox account, which means handing over an email address. Recipients can download without an account.

VeilShare never asks for an email to share a file. You drop a file, get a link, and that's it. An account is optional and gives you 5 GB of storage, permanent links and access to your uploads from any device.

Free limits and link controls

Dropbox Basic gives you 2 GB of storage, and anything you share by link has to fit inside it.
