Encryption: who can read your files?

WeTransfer encrypts files in transit with TLS and at rest with AES-256. That protects against someone intercepting the upload or stealing a disk, but WeTransfer holds the keys. In principle, the provider, an attacker who breaches it, or anyone who can legally compel it can decrypt what you uploaded.

VeilShare encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM in your browser before a single byte is uploaded. The key lives in the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to a server. We only ever store ciphertext, so we couldn't read your files even if we wanted to.

Accounts and personal data

Since November 2024, WeTransfer requires every sender to have an account. If you send without being logged in, you're asked for your email address and a verification code, and a free account is created for you. Recipients still don't need an account.

VeilShare never asks for an email to share a file. You drop a file, get a link, and that's it. An account is optional and gives you 5 GB of storage, permanent links and access to your uploads from any device.

Free limits and expiry

WeTransfer's free plan allows up to 10 transfers or 3 GB total in any rolling 30-day window, and links expire after 72 hours. VeilShare gives you 3 GB of storage without an account and unlimited transfers, with links that last up to 72 hours. A free account raises your storage to 5 GB and lets you keep files permanently.

VeilShare also lets you set a download limit and a password on any upload for free, so a link can self-destruct after the recipient has fetched the file. WeTransfer offers free password protection too, but only with an account.

Paid plans and payment privacy

WeTransfer's paid plans are built for volume: Starter raises the 30-day allowance from 3 GB to 300 GB, and Ultimate allows unlimited transfers of up to 1 TB each, with branded pages and access control.

VeilShare's paid plans raise the free plan's storage and download limits. Pay by card through Stripe, or make a one-time Bitcoin payment that never renews, so nothing is tied to your bank card.
